Cadmium coatings have good corrosion resistance, and will perform pretty better than other coating treatments especially under the marine atmospheric environment. But the expense of waste solution treatment in the electroplating of cadmium is large, the high price is 15-20 times more than electrogalvanizing. Therefore, cadmium electroplating fasteners would not be found in normal industries, but only used in some certain environments, such as oil rigs fasteners and HNA aircraft fasteners.
Chrome coatings are very stable in the atmosphere, not easy to fade and lose luster, with high hardness and good wear resistance. Chrome coatings on fasteners are generally for decorative use. But it is less used in industries with strict requirement for corrosion resistance, because good chromium plated fasteners are as expensive as stainless steel, only in the case that stainless steel fastener is not tough enough, then using chrome-plated fasteners.
To prevent the material corrosion, copper and nickel should be plated before chrome plating. Chrome coating can withstand the high temperature up to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit (650°C). But it also has the problem of hydrogen embrittlement as in electro-galvanizing.
